There are myriad of environmental challenges which include : deforestation, soil erosion, overstocking, land reclamation of swamps and wetlands, forest areas encroachment and poor management of waste. All these have drastic impact on both human and wildlife health, and pose a serious hindrance to sustainable development. The Virunga Community Programs intends to increase the level of its activities in sensitizing and mobilizing local communities especially youths in the Virunga massif region to plant trees.
We target at least 500 seedlings per year in order to conserve the forests. We will encourage local communities to actively carry out re-forestation on the steep slopes to mitigate soil erosion, control overgrazing. This program encourages local communities to work together with our reforestation activities in what’s called “Plant a Tree Program” . This program also will allow individuals, schools, and institutions of higher learning to care for trees whilst helping to create new forests and restore degraded areas.
