The word “travel” has different meaning to different people. For some, it’s camping with friends in Musanze, while for others it is riding an elephant in India. Everybody’s dream vacation might be different. However, the reasons for taking one usually are similar. We need a change in scenery and break from our daily lives so that we may see something we have never seen before.
There are some travellers that add another element to vacationing: helping others. This is referred to as voluntourism, which is a combination of both volunteering and tourism. It’s also called volunteer vacation or volunteer travel.
Voluntourism is an increasingly growing industry which attracts all kinds of people. Everyone from college spring breakers to retired baby boomers are interested in mixing their travel with noble deeds, and there are always voluntourism opportunities that are available for any interest or preference. You may go to Rwanda and trek the mountain gorilla, travel to Uganda for a community development project or work with a group of doctors in Kenya.
A traveller may visit some exotic region with the sole purpose of volunteering. This also may be good opportunity for people to learn about different culture and explore a region while helping those in need.
Several voluntours are in locations of the world like the Virunga massif where there is a need and volunteers are ready to supply the means. This may come in the form of money, time or any other need for an impoverished area.
In the Virunga massif, there are several opportunities for voluntourism. The most pressing one is always in the education sector. While the governments are working very hard to make sure educational resources and facilities are available to the local communities, population growth and lack of enough resources has given rise to several challenges in the sector.
Virunga Community Programs has been supporting children in Virunga massif since its establishment. As a volunteer, you may spend your time helping teach English in the classroom or enhance the computer curriculum, help with school projects such as building education facilities in and around the local community.
We are going to offer you a perfect place where you may spend some few days volunteering with friends and families.
