1. MOUNT NYIRAGONGO
It is a beautiful active volcano that features the world’s largest lava lake. Its summit rim is largely devoid of vegetation and is sometimes dusted with snow over molten lava. Most often it glows red and even spits fire! It is greatly feared during eruptions- its flows are greatly fluid. This is a wonder site to visit equipped with a camera. Its forested lower slopes is home of chimpanzees, monkeys and bushbuck.
Meet the highly intelligent, good natured and most fascinating primate to observe. They are gentle giants and peaceful creatures. They live in families. Interestingly, the tender care and love the mother shows to their young ones is similar to human nature. They live in the dense forests in Virunga National park- Congo, Volcanoes National park- Rwanda, Mgahinga forest and Bwindi impenetrable forest in Uganda.
3.VIRUNGA NATIONAL PARK
It is located in Democratic Republic of Congo. It is part of virunga massif. That is, virunga region covering DRC, Rwanda and Uganda. The park is known for its geologic wonder and biodiversity. It contains the two word’s most active volcanoes, that is, Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira. It is the home of mountain gorillas.
4.KAHUZI-BIEGA NATIONAL PARK
The Kahuzi-Biega National Park is a protected area near Bukavu town in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The park is a UNESCO world Heritage site. It is known for its unique biodiversity of rainforest habitat (flora and fauna) and its eastern lowland gorillas.
5. IDJWI ISLAND
Idjwi is an Island on lake Kivu. It belongs to DR Congo. It is a clan- based society that became a kingdom in the late 18thc. It is the second largest inland Island in Africa and the tenth largest in the world. It is very beautiful. Its greenery, calmness and serenity make it ideal for relaxation. It is an inspiring environment for photographers.
VIRUNGA MASSIF ACTIVITIES
1. GORILLA TREKKING
Treks are excellently organised by very experienced guides in Kahuzi- Biega National Park and Maiko National park as they are the only places that have eastern lowland gorillas. You will interact with mountain gorillas on our trekking tour, explore and enjoy awe-striking sceneries within Virunga national Park, Volcanoes National Park- Rwanda ,and Mgahinga National park and Bwindi impenetrable forest– Uganda . The visitors will share their experiences with local or host communities.
2.ENVIRONMENTAL TREE PLANTING PROJECT
We give a lot of effort on conservation of environment by helping locals to plant trees to mitigate the challenges like deforestation, soil erosion, overstocking, and forest areas encroachment, land reclamation of swamps and wetlands, and poor management of waste. Our aim is to plant a minimum of 1000 trees each year to help conserve the fragile local ecology.
3. LOCAL HOME STAYS AND COOKING LESSONS
The local or host communities are very friendly and receptive. You will be spending night with Congolese family, learn about them, share ideas and experiences, prepare local delicacies and local beer. It is real fun! After dinner, you will be entertained by talented story tellers narrating Congo’s rich history, tradition and culture. Usually the story telling is done around the campfire or bonfire. .
4. BOAT RIDE AND THE IDJWI ISLAND IN LAKE KIVU
Lake Kivu is one of the deepest lake in Africa. Boat riding in the lake is quite fascinating and enjoyable. We have all the necessary facilities and very experienced professional instructors. As you will be enjoying your boat ride, climax it all by anchoring on the liveliest island called Idjwi. The people living in Idjwi Island are known for their generosity and welcoming nature. You will feel homely away from home
5. HANDCRAFT IN NORTH KIVU- GOMA- EASTERN CONGO
We are tapping and nurturing artistic talents among the youths, women and the marginalised. We partnered with cooperatives like the North Kivu artefact sellers association (ASSAVENOKI). They Produce artefacts and we help them to find both local and international market to improve their livelihoods and alleviate poverty. The handicrafts include jewelleries, ornaments, traditional baskets and other attractive souvenir items.Their baskets are intricately woven, beautiful and has cultural attachment.
